Deep dive: how we developed the new Brompton e-Motiq

How we engineered the next generation of electric folding bikes

Every design decision we make starts with one non-negotiable constraint at Brompton: the fold comes first. With e-Motiq, the goal wasn’t to reinvent the bike but to improve how electric assistance feels, responds and integrates, without ever compromising the compact fold that defines a Brompton.

In short: e-Motiq is our latest electric drive platform. It delivers smoother torque response, better range efficiency and more balanced weight distribution, all wrapped into the same compact folding geometry people already rely on.

What is Brompton e-Motiq?

e-Motiq is the next evolution of our electric system rather than a full bike redesign. The fold is unchanged. Instead, we focused on refining how the motor, battery and rider interact together.

It brings together more precise motor tuning, smarter torque sensing, improved battery performance and better overall balance, resulting in a system that feels more intuitive and connected to the rider. There is also a strong level of versatility, as this is not just a product for one particular model but a shared system across the G, C, P and T Lines, with common parts that create a more unified platform.

This isn’t our first foray into electric folding bikes, so we set about learning from its predecessor and evolving the system.

Why we developed e-Motiq

Our first electric Brompton was released nearly 10 years ago. In that time, e-bikes have become part of the furniture on our streets and the technology has improved exponentially. We knew it was time to bring fresh power to our folding bikes.

“We proudly launched Brompton Electric in 2018 and while it has delighted many customers and generated many smiles, we can’t afford to stand still,” says David Rhys, Brompton’s Head of Electric Systems.

The team in Greenford, west London, took user feedback from that first product and built a drive system that was sympathetic to the Brompton Fold. They moved the motor into the rear wheel, tidied up the wiring, added a handlebar control and improved the overall ride feel.

“We also wanted to be able to improve the ongoing experience of our customers after they join the Brompton family,” adds David. “Not only did we add range estimation and start assist functionality to the e-Motiq system, we now have the ability to update the system with new features in the future through our over the air update process via our mobile app.”

The result: all-new hardware and regular software updates make the Brompton Electric range futureproof for years to come.

Engineering the ride feel

One of the key updates that David Rhys unveiled earlier is the improved ride feel. This is more than just turning the pedals.

The torque sensor calibration was refined to improve responsiveness at lower cadences, which makes a real difference to stop-start riding. Starts feel smoother, climbs feel more controlled, and assistance ramps up in a way that feels proportional to how hard you’re pedalling, not abrupt.

Weight distribution was another major focus in the development of e-Motiq. On a compact frame, even small changes in component placement can affect handling. By moving the motor to the rear wheel, we improved steering stability and traction, and low-speed manoeuvrability, which matters when you’re navigating traffic or tight streets.

Another addition to the overall ride feel is the handlebar control. Within it, you have the control over your journey to provide a boost when you need it.

Testing and validation

e-Motiq was developed with real-world use in mind. Key components like the motor were running 24/7 for months to ensure they performed in the way our customers expect. Our staff rode e-Motiq prototypes from which ride data was downloaded. Their opinions and feedback were also an essential part of the process. After all, our staff are also our customers.

Range and battery performance

Range always depends on terrain, rider weight and assist mode, but in typical urban conditions you can expect up to around 90 km. This is a notable improvement on the previous system and is proof that power efficiency technology has come a long way.

“Being based in London, we have the perfect city backdrop for testing, ensuring the system performed in line with our simulations through all four seasons,” explains David whose team commuted to and from our Greenford office daily throughout the early development stages.

“The newer battery has up to date cell technology providing greater capacity in the same size battery shell. More power can be drawn from the battery when required to help tackle headwinds or hills that may otherwise slow you down on your journey.”

The new charger is small and easy to carry wherever you go. Simply chuck it in your Brompton Bag and get pedalling. When it’s time to charge, remove the bag with your battery and plug it in. A full charge usually takes around four hours and you’ll be ready to roll in no time.

Speed and performance of e-Motiq

In the UK and Europe, electric assistance is limited to 25 km/h (15.5 mph) in line with regulations. You can of course ride faster under your own power, but the motor assistance gently cuts out once you pass that threshold, for example when descending a hill.

Maintenance and durability

Day-to-day maintenance on an electric bike is much like any bike:

  • Keeping the drivetrain clean

  • Checking brakes

  • Inflating the tyres before riding to reduce wear

  • Periodic servicing

The addition of a battery and motor add little to the maintenance load. Just make sure you charge the battery regularly and avoid prolonged periods at very high or very low states of charge. Keep all the surfaces as clean as possible to avoid ingress in the connectors and scratches on the frame.

When developing e-Motiq, it was important to us that it wasn’t complicated for our customers. The electric system itself is sealed and built for durability in urban conditions, so water ingress is highly unlikely. As part of the hardware development, the Electric App was improved to include features like service reminders to keep your bike in ship shape.

New e-Motiq T Line

The biggest development for Brompton Electric was the inclusion of T Line.

“T Line was just too tempting not to create!” admits David who already rides a T Line regularly. “Combining the amazing lightweight frameset with the e-Motiq drive system gave the very best in lightweight hand carry portability, with the ease and joy of riding all in one bike.”

We didn’t evolve e-Motiq as a platform for just a few of our bikes; we wanted to roll the system out across the range giving the same experience to each frameset.

Is a Brompton Electric worth it?

For many riders, the answer is yes, especially if you commute regularly, tackle hills or combine cycling with public transport.

Electric assistance can reduce fatigue, make journeys faster and easier, and open up routes that might otherwise feel too demanding. The compact fold also means easier storage and better compatibility with trains and public transport.

Whether it’s “worth it” ultimately comes down to how often you ride, the terrain you face and what you need from your bike.

Which electric Brompton is best?

There isn’t a single answer. The right setup depends on your commute distance, terrain, storage space, budget and weight preferences.

If your riding is mostly compact urban travel such as commuting, a lighter configuration like the Electric P Line or Electric T Line might fit the bill. If you’re venturing onto varied terrain or want broader capability, something like the Electric G Line may be a better fit.

The Electric C Line is a great entry point into the world of electric folding bikes. It has the same great e-Motiq motor as all the other electric bikes in the range and it’s compatible with all the electric accessories such as bags, lights and ColourLab Touchpoints.

Who is e-Motiq for?

It’s built for the city and beyond. It’s for commuters, travellers, the what’s-over-that-hill riders, apartment dwellers, the cheeky bridleway testers, and anyone looking for compact electric mobility that fits around daily routines.

We create for the here-and-now with a view to seeing you out there for years to come thanks to smarter technology and outstanding build quality.

Final thoughts

e-Motiq isn’t a reinvention, it’s a refinement. It improves ride feel, efficiency, responsiveness and integration while protecting what matters most: the fold.

If you’re looking for an electric folding bike designed for everyday life and beyond, this is your ticket to freedom.
