Prudential RideLondon, the Mayor of London’s festival of cycling, will host the 10th Brompton World Championship as part of its Grand Prix races in St James’s Park on Saturday 1 August
It is the first time that the Brompton World Championship will be held in London giving Brompton riders the chance to race on a world-famous circuit that starts on The Mall, takes in Horseguards Parade and Buckingham Palace before finishing back on The Mall.
This unique and hugely enjoyable event takes the form of a Le Mans style start as 575 smartly-dressed competitors from around the world make a mad dash to unfold their bikes before setting off on the circuit. Previous winners include the British racing cyclist and writer Michael Hutchinson and Roberto Heras, the three-time winner of the Vuelta a España.
The Brompton World Championship was first held in Barcelona in 2005 and has a strong international participation base with sixteen national championships taking place around the world every year.
The 2015 Brompton World Championship will host 575 races and hundreds more at the other Brompton led events on the day. This is truly an international affair, with 35 different countries represented at the race!
Brompton bikes have been made in London since 1975 and are made for city riding, making the Prudential RideLondon Grand Prix route the perfect backdrop to showcase this iconic British brand.
Prudential RideLondon, the world’s greatest festival of cycling with more than 95,000 riders participating in five events over the weekend of 1-2 August, will provide the perfect stage to showcase the performance and fun of these unique folding bikes. The Brompton World Championship will take place at 17:00 on Saturday 1 August, immediately after the Prudential RideLondon FreeCycle event.
Brompton is planning to become involved in every part of the festival, including giving as many people as possible the opportunity to ride a Brompton through the Brompton Bike Hire Scheme.
Stephen Loftus, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer for Brompton Bicycle, says: “We are delighted to be bringing our World Championship final to central London in partnership with Prudential RideLondon – it will be a fantastic spectacle, showcasing what is great about our bikes and lots of fun for all of those involved.”
Hugh Brasher, Event Director of Prudential RideLondon, said: “We are excited that Brompton Bicycle has added this unique event to the world’s greatest festival of cycling. Entrants and spectators alike will enjoy an unforgettable experience as 500 quintessentially British bikes ridden by an eclectic mix of nationalities and personalities get to race on the most famous roads in Britain.’’
Much more to get involved in
In addition to the main race there will also be a Brompton Urban Challenge taking place on the day, plus many more activites to be part of. Not sure what an Urban Challenge is? Here is the video from last year:
