Richmond, VA – The Brompton World Championship USA proved to be a challenging, technical, and soggy affair this year, but the weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the nearly 100 Bromptoneers who traveled from around the world to race in this year’s event.

The stage was as big as it’s ever been in the USA, with a flurry of smartly dressed Brompton cyclists dashing to unfold their bikes before setting off upon the very same course that the world’s top pro cyclists have been racing throughout the week: The UCI Road World Championships Road Circuit.

Featuring cobbled climbs and steep ascents on a slick, rainy, and windy early evening, Bromptoneers pedaled onward through beautiful downtown Richmond, Virginia.

The overall winner, David Mackay, of Brooklyn, NY, crossed the finish line in just under 30 minutes. Richard Spencer and Peter Yuskauskas rounded out the top three finishers in the Men’s category.

Elspeth Huyett from Bicycling Magazine took first in the Women’s category, followed by Julie Secor and Anna Zhao.

The top finishers in the Veterans (50+) category were Thori Wolfe (Men’s) and Carol Lee Royer (Women’s).

Known for its smartly dressed competitors, (no visible Lycra allowed!), this year’s crowd did not disappoint. Among a diverse and colorful group, Deborah Lance-Pope won the “Best Dressed” Women’s award for her remarkable sanguine dress, and Chris Craig took him the Men’s “Best Dressed” award, donning a sharp seersucker suit throughout the event.

This year's Brompton World Championship will take place on September 25th, alongside the UCI Road World Championships in Richmond, Virginia. A uniquely competitive, sartorially singular event, the race will begin with a "Le Mans" style start, with each competitor sprinting to his or her Brompton and unfolding the bike before taking off for a lap on the 10-mile UCI Road World Championships circuit.

Several categories of winners will be awarded upon completion of the event, including Fastest Male, Fastest Female, Fastest Veteran, Fastest Team, and, in keeping with the spirit of the race, Best Dressed.

Prizes include custom-made Chapman bike bags, Brooks bags and saddles, a 2-night luxury hotel stay from Small Luxury Hotels, and Ortlieb gear.

The Brompton World Championship was first held in Barcelona in 2006. Ten years on there are 11 satellite events taking place around the world, including Japan, Korea, Germany, and Mexico.

The fastest male and female automatically qualifies for the BWC 2016 Final.
