Brompton World Championship Final
The Brompton World Championship is back!
We are excited to announce that Prudential RideLondon cycling festival will again be hosting the Brompton World Championship Final in central London on Saturday 29 July.
The iconic race course covers 8 laps around St James’ Park, past Buckingham Palace and down The Mall. Competitors start the race with a Le Mans-style dash, unfolding their bikes before taking on the 16km circuit. The fastest person to complete the race then ends the race.
The dress code is city-chic with lycra sportswear most definitely not permitted.
The ballot for entry is now closed, good luck to all those who applied.
The 2016 final was the best yet with riders from 34 countries travelling to London to participate. It was a star-studded line up including retired British Cyclists David Millar and Michael Hutchinson, Paralympic cyclist Tom Staniford as well as a team of BBC journalists! We also had the national champions from 12 BWC Final qualifying events.
Two-time Brompton World Champion Mark Emsley stormed to a third victory in 00:25:54 while the women’s reigning champ Isabel Hastie also defended her title in an exciting photo finish with a time of 00:28:09.
We look forward to seeing you on The Mall in July.

Riders to Watch
2017 to be the most competitive women’s field yet.
The women’s competition is going to see a shake up with the 3-time winner Isabel Hastie absent from this year’s race. Contenders include 2016 2nd place winner (in that dramatic photo finish) Sarah Phelps (A2) who is sure to be leading the female pack this year. Other contenders in the women’s categories are all new faces to the Brompton scene looking to cause a stir in their first BWC; Annalise Murphy (A52) (Irish Olympic Silver Medallist in Sailing) and Ireland National Triathlon team members Sarah Early (A51) and Daithi Labhrai (A58) and finally Jen Allum (A50) a regular on the track racing scene.

I got into cycling after buying a steel vintage bike when commuting to university, from there I joined a local cycling club, rode longer miles and tried competing in a few local races for fun, however, only ever on big bikes! I discovered the versatility of Brompton when living in London, getting my white 6 speed S type for commutes to work was awesome as it enabled me to keep riding, explore the city, and still go fast.
The BWC has such an electric atmosphere and was so much fun to take part in last year. After such a tough race, and an agonising second place, I'm looking forward to battling it out on the Mall with all the other Brompton fans who are dressed to impress, and of course, relaxing with a G&T once the race is done!

After a lot of deliberation and online custom builds I finally took the plunge in December 2016. I wish I had got it sooner. I probably have the problem a lot of cyclists have which is the number of bikes I have is always n+1. I wanted a bike that I could bring everywhere with me easily and the Brompton seemed perfect. Getting to and from the gym and weekend adventures and racing fully clad men on road bikes in Lycra whenever I get the chance.
Race number: A51
Chose Brompton for commuting across London. The aim was to avoid the tube as much as possible for the daily commute. I've been living in small flats in London for years too, space is precious. A foldable bike is ideal for London living. I haven't used my Brompton as much as I would like recently since my brother moved to London and took a “loan” of it. I think it just shows that everyone who tried one, loves it!
Race number: A58
I've had my Brompton since 2013, bought it in London instead of getting an Oyster Card as it seemed like a better way to see the city for a few days. It is the best asset class in my opinion; I use it every single day, not necessarily because I need to, just because I enjoy riding it so much, nodding in approval to the tiny number of Brompton riders in Dublin and, of course, training for BWC.
Race number: A50
I got into cycling properly a couple of years ago when I damaged my achilles tendons and couldn’t walk very well. I signed up to do some long distance rides across Europe and eventually was suckered into racing; it seemed like an efficient way to train. Now it’s the other way around - I mostly race on the track with a little bit of road and crit racing.
It’ll be my first BWC and I hope to do well. At the very least, I’ll aim for a smooth and fast unfold, and to finish rubber side down!
