Founded in 1991 as a mountain bike race, the Sea Otter Classic has since become an event that highlights nearly all facets of the cycling world.
Originally known as the Laguna Seca Challenge until a name change in 1993, the Sea Otter Classic now boasts a laundry list of cycling superlatives. Known as "the world's premiere cycling festival" and claiming the crown as North America's largest consumer bike exposition, the Sea Otter Classic draws more than 10,000 athletes and 65,000 spectators and fans every year.
"We're thrilled to bring the Brompton World Championship to the West Coast in 2016," says Brompton's North America General Manager, Katharine Horsman. "Sea Otter is the perfect venue to showcase the versatility of our bikes - they're smartly suited for cities, of course, but they also feel just as at-home on the open road. What better place to show off the performance element of the Brompton than the world-famous Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca?"
Indeed, the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca will be a fun - if formidable - challenge in this year's BWC USA. A racecourse with historical significance, the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca features 11 turns over its 2.238 miles, and is best known for "The Corkscrew:" a hard-left, hard-right combo that with a double-digit descent gradient.
Participants of the 2016 BWC USA will race for 5 laps - just over 11 miles - until the checkered flag is waved when the first rider crosses the finish line.
Before and after the race, though, attendees to the Sea Otter Classic will have the opportunity to check out the expo, featuring hundreds of vendors all displaying new products, distributing free samples, and selling cycling gear at bargain discounts. There are also a number of Grand Fondos and casual rides open to cyclists of all ability levels.
