One fine day under the beaming summer sun, history was made.

Dubbed as Brompton Urban Challenge Quezon City (#BUCQC), Asia's and the Philippines’ first Brompton Urban Challenge kicked off on May 29, 2016 at the University of the Philippines Diliman’s vast and beautiful tree-lined campus grounds. Participants met and mingled with fellow Bromptoneers while spectators marveled at the Brompton’s distinctive look and zany colors. The air became charged with electrifying anticipation as the gun start drew nearer, with 18 teams excitedly planning and strategizing their routes.

The challenges took the teams around the campus visiting historical grounds, famous landmarks, offbeat art nooks…even an astronomical observatory! One of the challenges entailed a ride with the folded Brompton in the popular “Ikot" Jeepney, while another was a team photo on a track stand pose right by the iconic UP Oblation, a 3.5-meter tall bronze-painted concrete statue that is the single-most significant and distinctive symbol of the University. Teams were required to teach a stranger how to fold and unfold the Brompton, and were also challenged to flex their creative muscles and find a unique and crazy nook to stow their folded Bromptons in!

Finisher loot bags loaded with various items from sponsors were distributed to all the participants upon their arrival, as more fun and prizes awaited. Teams found themselves frantically carrying, pushing, and trolleying their Bromptons in the Relay Race, while individual participants attempted to stall time in the Slowest Race. In keeping with the Brompton’s unique brand and style, special awards were also given to the Best Dressed participants. Bromptoneers who didn’t join the race but came to watch and cheer friends on were not exempt from the fun and prizes as they tried to beat each other’s time on the Two-hand and One-hand Fastest Fold contests.

In a grand end to a historic event, Team 6, with an official time of 1:02:58, snuffed out their competitors and emerged victorious. The team members, composed of Armando Lee, Larry Ronquillo, Kristian Ablan, and Eugene Buenaventura, were each awarded an Ambit 3 Suunto watch, and went home with the exceptional distinction of being the top Bromptoneers in the country’s and Asia’s first ever Brompton Urban Challenge.

Truly a fine day to make Brompton history!
