Run, Unfold, Ride – the 2015 Brompton World Championship
On Sunday the 16th of August, the German Brompton National Championship was held in Bremen for the second time. It was a great success.

On Sunday morning it was drizzling lightly as the first competitors arrived at the beautiful and majestic Dorint Park Hotel in Bremen. Despite the typically British weather a cheerful atmosphere was ensured by a supporting programme which included a bike unfolding competition, a Rollapaluza race and the pipe band “Crest of Gordon”. And by midday, as the imposing Brompton convoy rounded the ramparts towards the race circuit, even the rain had stopped.
In four groups the 270 entrants started after each other in traditional Le Mans style. Six laps had to be completed for a total of 13 kilometres. The route varied from stretches of asphalt road to paths in the park, presenting the same challenges that Brompton cyclists must negotiate in their everyday lives. All crossed the finishing line with a big smile, having been cheered on and inspired by the many spectators along the route, spectators who also enjoyed the many original outfits that were worn.
The winners were declared at the victory ceremony: Alexander Schenkl (men's under-60s), Jill Cheney (women's under-60s), Peter Dedendach (men's 60+) and Ute Lösken (women's 60+). The unfolding competition was won by Giacomo Elia from Rome in an amazing 8.38 seconds and the prize for the most original outfit went to fireman Thomas Klappich.
It was a fantastic day, one with the colourful British Brompton folding cycles occupying centre stage – and, of course, their riders, who took part with enthusiasm, good spirits and the appropriate gravitas.
